St Bernard of Clairvaux, 'The Epistles of the Venerable doctor and the first abbot of the convent of Clarivaux'. The second collection of his works. The title page continues (trans.): '...the most accurate and faithful revision...of the older models...the genuine integrity has been restored...'. Venice, 1558. The text block looks complete and has been rebound within the last 30 years in a superb calf binding with an angelic St Peter holding his coat of arms tooled into the leather. It is then enclosed in a lined custom-made box. The box itself is half-morocco bound: gilt-tooled to spine: S.BERNARDI OPERA 1568. A spectacular piece of preservation.
